Do you know the feeling when you pay off a credit card, a car or even you home? What a relief. You dream and imagine what to do with your surplus. Well, imagine our church family retiring out debt. The endless possibilities for ministry: the youth programs, mission work, Katrina Aid, Habitat for Humanity, the elderly programs, the music ministry and on and on. Retiring our debt means serving the Lord in a bigger and brighter capacity. As it is written in Romans 13:8 ‘Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled God’s law.’ Let us not just dream of what we can do, but put our imaginations in to action!

While as members of Christ United Methodist Church we support our church with our prayers, presences, gifts and services. Now let us continue to expand upon that covenant to our community so that we as a church may continue our growth to become more like Christ.

Every Thursday, as a member of the CUMC Prayer team, I come to the prayer room at 3 p.m. The first thing I do is kneel beneath our beautiful stained glass window and I thank the Lord for allowing me to come into this lovely room and for the peace of His presence. My favorite things in the prayer room are the prayer quilts. What a special gift of love for someone who is ill or suffering in some other way. These gifts have been so comforting to the recipients. I pray some of the funds freed up when our debt is retired can be used to continue and expand this ministry.

By paying down the debt on our church, how will that impact the ministries and the church? I believe that without the burden of debt our church will be able to expand its ministries. Particularly close to my heart are the children and youth ministries. Our children and young families are the future of the church.

I am proud of what we do with our beautiful facility. There are always people here using it. I know this pleases God. If we pay our indebtedness on it, we can spend that interest money on our ministries and honor God. Plus, that will make us feel good and ‘be about our Father’s business.

By reducing or eliminating the debt on our facilities, we will be freed from using our gifts to pay toward interest and debt. It will allow these resources to be used in a way to further children’s activities, missions, and overall growth.

With the retirement of the building fund indebtedness, CUMC will once again be able to pursue our long standing work in missions. Christ calls for us to help and protect the children, the poor, and the widows of the world. Being debt free will allow us to do more to accomplish His goals.
